A LEADING HEALTHCARE PROVIDER MODERNIZES IT INFRASTRUCTURE AND BOOSTS PERFORMANCE

 

CHALLENGE

A leading healthcare provider had a corporate initiative to modernize their infrastructure and improve their disaster recovery strategy. The company’s legacy hardware was aging and continued maintenance and support was becoming costly. The technology initiative was twofold. First, they needed to move their legacy storage and servers to a new virtual environment. Second, as part of their business continuity strategy, the disaster recovery (DR) solution required the existing server infrastructure to be moved to another location.

SOLUTION

The infrastructure modernization project had unique transitional needs which required a highly customized plan. WEI took a non-static approach to this re-architecture project. From the hardware layer through to the virtual layer, WEI worked collaboratively with the healthcare provider’s technology team to clearly define all system requirements.

WEI designed a full-service solution comprised of several parts. The new virtual environment was built out onto a new Cisco UCS solution installed with the latest version of VMware and Site Recovery Manager (SRM). The existing virtual farm was then migrated off their HP rackmount servers to the new UCS platform, tested and validated for production traffic. To fulfill the DR requirements, the old servers were updated and moved to a new location with repurposed HP servers running the new version of VMware configured with SRM. The new DR site was located at the parent company location which had its own unique customizations. WEI collaborated with all parties and created interoperability to connect the two environments with SRM configurations for failover in the event of a disaster or outage. WEI’s project management team oversaw and supported all phases of the project, including planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and delivery of a successful project closeout complete with full documentation.

WEI’s technical project manager became an extension of the team by working with the CIOs and technical leaders to determine the schedule, process, and project scope—ensuring the project remained on schedule and within budget. Project management excellence became even more important because as the project progressed, the healthcare provider grew interest in additional technology features and WEI was able to rework the project plan as needed to provide an optimal solution.

OUTCOME

With WEI as a strategic IT partner, the healthcare provider successfully transitioned their legacy servers and systems to a new virtualized environment and repurposed hardware from the original, physical environment to the off-site data center—ahead of schedule.

  • Create a disaster recovery plan to safeguard valuable data
