WEI updates grocery retailer’s 4,000 in-store devices, implements new MDM solution for improved operational efficiency and customer experience

CHALLENGE
A nationally recognized grocery retailer was struggling with its in-store mobile device management (MDM) solution, which wasn’t performing adequately to meet in-store inventory, sales, and operations requirements. The system included barcode readers, price-check machines, kiosks and other supporting equipment, each of which were different types of devices. The company wanted to update its infrastructure with new devices and replace its legacy MDM system.
Following its success on two previous projects with WEI, the company again called on WEI to develop and implement a new in-store solution. WEI faced the complex task of updating 4,000 devices (many of which could not leave physical stores) in a cost-effective way and deploying a new MDM.
SOLUTION
The WEI team recommended VMware AirWatch, a stand-alone system for mobility content and applications management. The team then carefully identified opportunities to either add, replace or reconfigure existing hardware and connectivity solutions while keeping costs down.
This approach would provide the company’s IT team with the means to remotely configure, upgrade and secure devices in a centralized way. This was critical because both WEI and the internal IT team analyzed the applications and features that store personnel would require and identified ways to protect critical data in the event any hardware was stolen from a store.
OUTCOME
WEI’s team removed the company’s legacy MDM system across its physical stores. Working with VMware AirWatch directly, WEI migrated the grocery retailer’s in-store handheld devices to the stand-alone solution, which ran as an app on each device and as a virtual appliance in the company’s data center.
The grocery retailer’s employees now enjoy a better user experience, and the universality of the new devices, along with the new MDM system, helps them streamline operations and improve the customer experience.
